      Abstract

Saleh Bay is a semi-enclosed marine ecosystem vulnerable to nutrient runoff from surrounding watersheds, including the Bera River Basin. This study aimed to map the spatial distribution of nutrients from DAS Bera and assess their impact on water quality using numerical modeling. The simulation employed MIKE 21 with hydrodynamic and Ecolab modules. Input data included wind, tides, bathymetry, river discharge, and in-situ concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate (NO3), ammonia (NH4), and phosphate (PO4). Model validation showed strong performance with RMSE values of 0.0316 and 0.0340, correlation coefficients > 0.97. Current patterns were dominated by tidal cycles, with speeds ranging from 0.03–0.27 m/s. The highest nutrient concentrations appeared in coastal zones, especially during ebb and high tide phases. DO values <3 mg/L were observed in the southern coastal area, indicating potential hypoxia. These results highlight the significant influence of tides and watershed inputs on nutrient distribution, and demonstrate that numerical modeling is a valuable tool for sustainable coastal water quality management.
