      Abstract

Remote villages in Indonesia continue to face challenges in accessing reliable and sustainable electricity. Renewable-based electricity offers a promising solution to enhance energy access while reducing carbon emissions. This study assesses the potential of renewable energy generation and identifies the most optimal system configurations for Waka Village, located in a coastal area of East Nusa Tenggara, and Pa’Raye Village, situated in a highland region of North Kalimantan. The selected configurations were then analyzed from technical, economic, and environmental perspectives. Simulations were conducted using HOMER software to explore various renewable energy scenarios. The results indicate that a solar–wind hybrid system is most suitable for Waka Village, with a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of $0.466/kWh, while a solar-only system is optimal for Pa’Raye Village, with an LCOE of $0.484/kWh. These systems offer significant environmental benefits, including annual CO2 emission reductions of 144.476 tons in Waka and 97.434 tons in Pa’Raye. Additionally, they open opportunities for carbon credit revenues of up to IDR 16,484,544 per year in Waka and IDR 14,030,496 per year in Pa’Raye through international mechanisms. While national schemes offer lower returns, they still provide meaningful contributions. This study demonstrates that renewable energy systems are technically and economically feasible for rural electrification while supporting climate action and sustainable economic development.
