      Abstract

Palm oil industry waste, particularly palm kernel shells, has great potential as a source of lignin to produce carbon nanofibers (CNF). This research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of lignin-based CNF composited with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via the electrospinning method. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of varying lignin/PAN composite ratios on the characteristics of CNF and to evaluate its electrochemical performance as a supercapacitor electrode material. CNF was prepared with three ratio variations (3:7, 5:5, and 7:3), then characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDX, XRD, and Raman, and its electrochemical properties were tested. The results showed that the lignin/PAN composite ratio of 5:5 provided the most optimal electrochemical performance with the highest specific capacitance of 25.98 F/g and a total capacitance reaching 50.64 F. The addition of lignin was also proven to increase the carbon yield after the carbonization process and produced smaller fiber diameters. The results of XRD, Raman, and electrochemical tests confirmed the formation of a carbon structure with potential for electrode applications, making palm kernel shell waste an alternative precursor for supercapacitor electrodes.
