      Abstract

Mycophagy refers to the feeding behavior of organisms on fungi. The association between insects and fungi represents the most common form of mycophagy but remains underexplored, especially in Indonesia. This study examines insect mycophagy activity, describes the symbiotic relationships involved, and characterizes the fungal hosts of these insects, including their potential antimicrobial properties. Samples were collected using opportunistic sampling and identified based on morphological characteristics. Antimicrobial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Propionibacterium acne, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 using the disc diffusion method with fungal extract concentrations of 200, 400, and 800 mg/mL. The study recorded four insect and six fungal species, with observed symbioses ranging from mutualism to commensalism. Fungal hosts exhibited stalked-cap-lamella or netted-cap morphologies with fleshy textures, some emitting distinctive aromas. This study is the first report in Indonesia of mycophagy involving Tritoma sp. and Lentinus sajor-caju, Ambyopus vittatus, and Dolichoderus sp. associated with Termitomyces species. Moreover, the presence of Tritoma sp. and A. vittatus is newly documented in the IPB University Arboretum. Antimicrobial assays revealed that L. sajor-caju inhibited S. aureus ATCC 6538 and P. acne in a concentration-dependent manner but showed no activity against C. albicans ATCC 10231 at any concentration tested.
