      Abstract

Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) is a microsporidian parasite that infects the hepatopancreas of shrimp and causes Hepatopancreatic Microsporidiosis (HPM). EHP infection leads to growth retardation without significant mortality. This study aimed to evaluate an experimental model of EHP infection via horizontal transmission using the oral method in Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design with two treatments (control and oral) and four replications for 14 days. Observed parameters included Daily Growth Rate (DGR), clinical signs, PCR and qPCR confirmation, and histopathological analysis. The results showed that EHP infection did not cause mortality but reduced the growth rate in the oral treatment (0.021 g/day) compared to the control (0.032 g/day). PCR and qPCR confirmed positive EHP infection, with the highest parasite abundance reaching 9.82 × 105 ± 0.62 × 105 copies/µL. Histopathological observations revealed structural changes in the hepatopancreas of infected shrimp. This study confirms that oral administration is an effective method for horizontal EHP transmission and can serve as an experimental infection model for further research. Keywords: Litopenaeus vannamei, EHP, oral infection, growth rate, PCR.
