      Abstract

Tomahu Island, situated in South Buru Regency, Maluku, represents a coastal region with considerable potential for development as a marine tourism destination. However, the area is also exposed to climate change impacts, necessitating that any development efforts emphasize sustainability and account for environmental vulnerability. This study sought to evaluate the coastal tourism suitability, vulnerability levels, and tourism carrying capacity of Tomahu Island. The methodology involved field observations and spatial analysis, employing the Tourism Suitability Index (IKW), Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI), and calculations of tourism carrying capacity. Findings revealed that 85% of the area was categorized as highly suitable, while the remaining 15% was considered suitable for coastal tourism development. In terms of coastal vulnerability, 25% of the area was classified as highly vulnerable, 10% as vulnerable, 50% as not vulnerable, and 15% as not very vulnerable. The Coastal Tourism Feasibility Index indicated that 35% of the region was deemed highly feasible, 30% conditionally feasible, and 35% moderately feasible for marine tourism development. The carrying capacity analysis estimated a maximum limit of 120 visitors per day for beach recreation and 52 visitors per day for swimming activities. These findings underscore Tomahu Island’s strong potential for sustainable marine tourism development, supported by an environment capable of accommodating tourism activities without exceeding its ecological limits.
