      Abstract

Swordtip squid (Uroteuthis edulis) is one of the important fisheries resources in Medan waters. This study aims to confirm the species by conducting morphological and molecular species authentication and analysing the reproductive biology of needle squid in Medan waters to serve as a basis for its management. The research period was between August 2021 and April 2023. Management efforts include morphological identification, molecular identification, and reproductive aspects. Based on the results obtained, squid from Belawan waters were morphologically identified and genetically validated as Uroteuthis edulis species. The sucker ring has 16 large teeth, 13 small teeth, and 6 sharp teeth. Mantle length ranges from 6.5-19 cm with a negative allometric growth pattern. The ratio of males and females was 1:0.49, with the size of the first maturing gonads of males and females being 16 cm and 17 cm, respectively. Male and female Lc values were 24.7 cm and 27.3 cm. The value of Lc > Lm is in the good category.
