      Abstract

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a bacterial species that frequently causes infections in cats. The increasing cases of antibiotic resistance in bacteria including, K. pneumoniae, are becoming a serious problem. This study aims to detect the presence of the ampC gene in K. pneumoniae bacteria from cats that are resistant to beta lactam antibiotics. The research method consisted of sample collection, isolation and identification of bacteria, antibiotic resistance testing, and detection of the ampC gene. The results showed that out of 29 samples (7 nasal swabs and 22 rectal swabs), 4 samples were positive for K. pneumoniae isolates based on biochemical tests. Resistance tests on 4 isolates showed resistance to beta lactam antibiotics, namely amoxicillin, amoxicillin clavulanate, and ampicillin. The ampC gene cannot be detected from all identified K. pneumoniae.
