      Abstract

The sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a protected species under the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. P.106/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2018 concerning Protected Plant and Animal Species. Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (TNBBS) serves as a natural habitat for the species. However, deforestation and land conversion into plantations have significantly reduced their habitat, leading to increased incidences of human elephant conflict. This research aims to analyze the home range and habitat preferences of sumatran elephants within TNBBS. The study employs Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) to estimate the elephants' home range. Furthermore, the GPS collar data are integrated with land cover maps and environmental variables such as elevation and slope to assess the habitat preferences of the sumatran elephants. The analysis shows that the elephants' home range covered 9753,27 ha in 2022, decreased to 6436,57 ha in 2023, and increased again to 10.437,15 ha in 2024. The habitat preference analysis indicates that sumatran elephants prefer shrublands and forests with gentle slopes and low to moderate elevations.
