      Abstract

The increasingly limited availability of irrigation water due to climate change and land use pressure demands the efficiency of irrigation systems in rice cultivation. This study aims to analyze the effect of subsurface irrigation system on water balance, water use efficiency, and productivity in paddy fields. The research was conducted in Sawah Baru, Bogor, using an automatic water level monitoring system and meteorological data for one growing season. Results showed that only 9.3% of the total water input was utilized through crop evapotranspiration, while the rest was lost through drainage and percolation. Varieties IPB 14S and INPARI 30 showed the highest water use efficiency with water productivity reaching 2.0 and 1.9 kg/m³. This system proved to be able to maintain soil moisture, but it was not technically optimal. The implication is that subsurface irrigation systems require precision management and selection of adaptive varieties to improve efficiency and sustainability of rice farming.
