      Abstract

DSSC (Dye Sensitized Solar Cell) is a third generation solar cell that uses dye molecules as light absorbing sensitizers. Various efforts have been made to improve the efficiency of DSSC, one of which involves the incorporation of carbon quantum dots (CQD). In this study, TiO2 semiconductor was synthesized using the wet chemical precipitation method, chlorophyll was extracted from spinach leaves, and CQD were synthesized from chitosan precursors via the hydrothermal method. The optical properties of the CQD showed an absorption peak at 394 nm and an emission peak at 539 nm. Three types of DSSC samples were fabricated, an unmodified sample, a co-sensitizer sample, and a co-active sample. The co-active sample showed an increase in efficiency from 0.0005% to 0.0020%, while the co-sensitizer sample showed a slight increase from 0.0005% to 0.0006%, although it’s fill factor (FF) decreased. The performance improvement is attributed to the addition of CQD to the TiO2 layer, which enhances the surface area for dye adsorption, enables more efficient electron injection, and reduces recombination.
