      Abstract

      U. lactuca residue has a high carbohydrate content that has the potential as a source of bioethanol by pretreatment process using DES and PAA. This study aims to characterize the biomass of U. lactuca residue through a combination method of DES ChCl:Urea and PAA pretreatment at different temperature and time treatments based on its physicochemical properties. The 10% DES ChCl:Urea pretreatment process was combined with 6% PAA pretreatment, using a two-level factorial design. The increase in temperature and time during pretreatment affected DES yield, DES+PAA yield, whiteness, reducing sugars, and functional groups. PAA can oxidize lignin and chromophoric groups in biomass so that the yield of DES+PAA decreased but the degree of whiteness increased. The highest reducing sugar content was obtained at 50 °C for 1 hour at 3.20 mg/mL, the resulting residue showed amorphous hemicellulose and cellulose marked by changes in wave numbers 2919 cm-1, 1626 cm-1, and 1030 cm-1 so that DES and PAA pretreatment is good enough as a screening stage in the biorefinery process on U. lactuca residue as a potential bioethanol raw material.
