      Abstract

The interaction of various soil-forming factors such as parent material, climate, relief, organisms, and time results in diverse soil characteristics across regions. Understanding of soil properties through profiling and classification can support in designing appropriate management strategies to improve land productivity. This study aims to analyze soil characteristics along a slope transect, including physical-chemical properties, and classify the soils into the subgroup level. The research was conducted at the IPB Sukamantri Experimental Field, Tamansari District, Bogor Regency, West Java Province. The study involved four stages: (1) field survey, (2) soil profile description and sampling, (3) laboratory analysis, and (4) data interpretation. The research results found that all four profiles had the same soil development and main horizon composition, namely the A and Bw horizons. Profiles P2 and P3 shared similar characteristics, with a very high organic C content in the A horizon, NaF pH of 11–12, P retention of approximately 95.67–98.95%, and very low bulk density (BD) ranging from 0.44 to 0.81 g/cm³. The bulk density, NaF pH, and P retention values in profiles P2 and P3 met the criteria for andic soil properties. Meanwhile, the bulk density, NaF pH, and P retention values in profile P1 did not meet the criteria for andic soil properties, whereas profile P4 exhibited weak or less pronounced andic soil properties. Profiles P2 and P3 have umbric and cambic diagnostic horizons, whereas P1 and P4 have ochric and cambic horizons. P1 and P4 are classified as Ordo Inceptisols, Suborder Udepts, Greatgroup Dystrudepts, with P1 as Typic Dystrudepts and P4 as Andic Dystrudepts. Profiles P2 and P3 are categorized as Ordo Andisols, Suborder Udands, Greatgroup Hapludands, and Subgroup Typic Hapludands.
