      Abstract

As a strategic food commodity, rice prices in one region can influence or be influenced by prices in other regions, indicating interregional connectedness. This study analyzes the connectedness and spillover effects of average rice returns across markets in eight regions of Central Java. The study uses secondary data on daily average rice prices at the district/city level from September 4, 2017, to November 11, 2024. The methodology includes the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and the Diebold-Yilmaz spillover approach. The results reveal significant connectedness and spillover effects. Throughout the analysis period, the Karanganyar district market was the largest net transmitter, while the Surakarta city market was the largest net receiver. The rolling window analysis of 290 days identifies three periods. In the first period, the Karanganyar market acted as the main net transmitter. In the second period, this role shifted to the Banyumas and Boyolali district markets. In the third period, the Tegal city and Karanganyar district markets became the primary net transmitters.
