      Abstract

The growth of whiteleg shrimp is closely related to the molting process because shrimp grow after changing their shells. However, many shrimps have a slow skin hardening process after molting, which affects their growth rate. Excess or lack of calcium availability in the maintenance medium will impact on decreasing the growth rate of shrimp. Therefore, adding calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with the right dose to the whiteleg shrimp cultivation medium is necessary. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding calcium carbonate on the molting process, water quality, and the growth rate of whiteleg shrimp. The experiment containers used 15 units of aquariums measuring 30×30×30 cm3 and filled with 15 liters of water. The experimental design consisted of control (without adding CaCO3), adding CaCO3 doses of 30 mg/L, 60 mg/L, and 90 mg/L with three replications each. The results of the study showed that the addition of 60 mg/L of CaCO3 was the best dose with the highest survival rate of 78.33%, specific growth rate of 9.02%/day, absolute weight growth of 1.72 g, optimal water quality, and the highest number of molting.
