      Abstract

Barrier layer thickness (BLT) is a layer located above the thermocline and below the mixed layer that has the capacity to affect the physical and biogeochemical parameters of a water body. The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between BLT and the distribution of chlorophyll-a and nutrients in the upwelling area of Banggai Waters in September 2022.The data from the BUDEE oceanographic expedition in September 2022 were utilized in this study. The analysis encompassed biogeochemical data from five observation stations within the upwelling region. The biogeochemical characteristics at the upwelling site (ST 14) were found to be characterized by high nitrogen (N+N) concentration (0.094 ppm), chlorophyll-a (0.344 mg/m3), relatively shallow Depth of Chlorophyll-a Maximum (DCM) (15 m), and BLT value with maximum thickness (49 m). These values contrast with those observed at stations that are far from the center of upwelling. The utilization of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) further elucidates the interrelationship between BLT, chlorophyll-a, and nutrients, demonstrating a cumulative percentage of 86%. The analysis reveals a positive correlation between BLT and nitrogen (N+N) concentrations, while phosphate concentrations do not exhibit a direct correlation. This observation signifies that BLT thickness significantly impacts nitrogen and chlorophyll-a concentrations, particularly within upwelling regions.
