      Abstract
SILVANA JULIANTI.

SILVANA JULIANTI. Effect of Varying Composition of Coconut Shell Active Carbon and Graphite on Carbon Electrode Performance. Supervised by ERUS RUSTAMI and NIDYA CHITRANINGRUM. Graphite carbon and activated carbon from coconut shells show promise as electrodes for fuel cells, supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries. This research aims to optimize these electrodes through composition, structure and morphology studies using experimental methods. Characterization techniques such as SEM- EDX, FTIR, XRD, and BET are used to evaluate electrode properties, as well as water content and conductivity tests to assess electrode stability and performance. The research results show that activation of coconut shell activated carbon (KACK) can increase the carbon content by up to 82.30% and produce a more optimal pore structure, as seen in the SEM test. Elements such as Ca, Al, Si, Mg, and K in KACK increase the surface area, adsorption capacity, and thermal stability, while the presence of Fe contributes to increased conductivity, although it slightly reduces the surface area. KACK also has 60% lower crystallinity than graphite, which can facilitate electron flow. Functional groups such as OH, C=O, and C-O in KACK support electrode capacitance and stability. The addition of KACK up to 30% produces optimal electrode performance, while additions above 30% tend to reduce performance. Additionally, KACK's hydrophobic properties improve its stability in long-term energy applications.
