      Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of barn owls as rat pest controllers at Kebun Bumi Arjo, PT Buluh Cawang Plantation. One of the major challenges in oil palm cultivation is rat infestation, which can damage both nonbearing and bearing oil palm trees. Utilizing barn owls is currently recommended as an effective method for controlling rats in oil palm plantations, as it is more environmentally friendly and sustainable compared to chemical pesticides. The research procedure involved selecting observation blocks, conducting surveys of barn owls, and monitoring rat populations. Observations were made to assess the correlation between barn owl populations and rat infestation levels. Results indicate that blocks with higher barn owl populations tend to experience lower rat infestations due to active owl roosts and cleaner environments. Conversely, blocks with lower barn owl populations faced higher infestation rates, attributed to inactive roosts, weed presence, proximity to other areas, and high conversion crops. These findings demonstrate that barn owl presence significantly influences rat pest control. The study recommends increasing barn owl populations in plantations as an effective and sustainable pest management strategy.
