      Abstract

Soft-shell crab is one of the products of mangrove crabs (Scylla spp.) that are harvested during molting so that the shell is soft. Seed stocking size will affect feeding, growth (final weight and final carapace), oxygen consumption rate, molting and rearing duration, and aquaculture business performance. There is not much information on seed stocking size in soft-shell crab culture in apartment systems. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyse the effect of different mangrove crab seed stocking sizes on the production and business performance of soft-shell crab aquaculture. Crab fry weighing 55-75 g tail-1 (small group), 80-100 g tail-1 (medium group), and 101-120 g tail-1 (large group) were reared for 30 days individually in apartment boxes using a recirculated aquaculture system (RAS). Mangrove crabs were fed with yellow mackerel (Selaroides leptolepis) once a day (17.00 WIB) on a restricted basis as much as 5% of day-1 biomass (3-6 g day-1) and sampled twice, on day 15 and day 30 of the rearing period. Water quality was maintained by cleaning the remaining feed and faeces using a seser. The treatment of different size groups affected the molting percentage, time, and number of molts. The small group produced a higher percentage of molting at 50% (molting on day 3 to day 28 with 18 crabs) compared to the medium group at 36.11% (molting on day 6 to day 29 with 13 crabs) and the large group at 27.78% (molting on day 6 to day 29 with 10 crabs) (P<0.05). The relative growth rate of molted and non-molted crabs, specific growth rate of molted and non-molted crabs, feed conversion ratio of molted and non-molted crabs, and survival rate were similar for all stocking size treatments.
