The Relationship Between Coral Reef Percent Cover and Water Quality in Gorom and Grogos Island, Maluku

Abstract

Coral reefs are essential marine ecosystems that are highly sensitive to environmental changes, including water quality. This study focuses on the distribution of coral reef coverage on Gorom and Grogos Islands in Maluku, aiming to understand the relationships between coral reef coverage and environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, brightness, dissolved oxygen, and current velocity. Understanding these relationships is crucial for effective coral reef management and conservation strategies. This study uses Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method to analyze the percent cover of coral reefs in four locations, namely GRM03, KOE15, MID01, and KOE4. The study found current velocity to have a positive correlation between coral reef coverage on Grogos and Gorom Islands. These findings highlight the complexity of coral reef ecosystems and suggest that other factors may also significantly influence coral reef coverage. Further research with more extensive data is recommended to gain an understanding of the factors affecting coral reefs in this region.

Terumbu karang adalah ekosistem laut penting yang sangat sensitif terhadap perubahan lingkungan, termasuk kualitas air. Penelitian ini berfokus pada distribusi tutupan terumbu karang di Kepulauan Grogos dan Gorom di Maluku, yang bertujuan untuk memahami hubungan antara tutupan terumbu karang dengan parameter lingkungan seperti suhu, salinitas, pH, kecerahan, oksigen terlarut, dan kecepatan arus. Memahami hubungan ini sangat penting untuk pengelolaan terumbu karang yang efektif dan strategi konservasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Point Intercept Transect (PIT) untuk menganalisis persen tutupan terumbu karang di empat lokasi, yaitu GRM03, KOE15, MID01, dan KOE4. Penelitian ini menemukan kecepatan saat ini memiliki korelasi positif antara cakupan terumbu karang. Temuan ini menyoroti kompleksitas ekosistem terumbu karang dan menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor lain juga dapat secara signifikan mempengaruhi tutupan terumbu karang. Penelitian lebih lanjut dengan data yang lebih luas direkomendasikan untuk mendapatkan pemahaman tentang faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi terumbu karang di wilayah ini.
