      Abstract

Roofs has crucial function in a building construction, particularly to protect buildings and the occupants from weather and increasing the aesthetic value. Meanwhile, the global warming phenomenon has been encouraged architects to use sustainable building materials like bamboo. However, bamboo's low dimensional stability, limited dimensions, and low fire resistance require thermal modification for effective utilization. A study was conducted to developed a prototype of laminated bamboo shingle prior to heat treatment of the bamboo lamina (160°C for 1, 2, and 3 hours), followed by its properties evaluation. The results showed that the shingle prototype which was successfully developed has an attractive design, was relatively light, and has good fire resistance. In addition, heat treatment was also improved dimensional stability of the shingle prototype, especially if the heat treatment is carried out for 1/2 hours, It is suspected that this improvements occurred due to a decrease in the hemicellulose content of the shingle protype during the heat treatment process. The treatment also make the surface color of the prototype shingle more attractive, becoming yellowish and reddish.
