      Abstract

Eels (Anguilla sp.) are nocturnal species that actively forages at night. The visual response, especially visual acuity of eels is crucial for the development of fishing methods and technology. This study aims to measure visual acuity, determine the visual axis, and calculate the maximum sighting distance of eels toward the bait. The visual acuity of eels was physiologically analyzed through a series of histological processes. Based on the results of the histological analysis of the eel eye samples, it was found that the structure of the receptor cells in the eel’s eye retina formed a mosaic, consisting of single and twin cone cells. The highest density of cone cells in eels was located in the ventro-temporal part of the retina, indicating that the eel’s vision is oriented toward the upper-front direction. The visual acuity of eels ranged from 0,04 to 0,09 for a fish with a total length of 350-630 mm. The maximum sighting distance of eels to detect a 10 mm diameter object ranged from 1,38 to 3,05 m for a body length of 350-630 mm.
