      Abstract
his study was carried out to anaJyze varietal differences on matter accumulation and chemical characteristics, and to screen the relationship of major growth characters with DM accumulation and chemical constituents in 4 varieties of cassava. The sweet varieties developed a sufficient source and canopy in short period at the early growth phase and then translocated assimilates to storage roots with a higher partitioning rate, even these varieties were considered as early-maturing varieties from the standpoint of the accumulation rates of STC and DM in roots. Moreover. the sweet varieties showed early-bulking characteristics having superior source and sink potentials for the increase of DWR and accumulation of DM in roots. The direct effects of TDW, R/SR, and LAI on the DWR were higher, while the R/SR, mw, DWL, and LAI showed higher direct effects on the STC. These characters were considered to be useful target characters to screen cassava varieties with higher tuber yield and STC. The HCNL and HCNR began to decrease after 5-7 and 3 MAP, respectively, except for Pucuk Biro showing a delayed accumulation of HCNR until 7 MAP. The HCNL showed relatively higher positive correlation (r=0.639) with the HC which was highly affected by NL, LAI, OWL, and LAD. The LAI, DWR, and STC gave higher negative direct effects on the HCNL and HCNR. At the harvest time, Gading was coosidered to be sweet with 5.8 mg HCNR 0 g-1 fresh weight, while Adiral seemed to be intermediate, containing 17.0 mg HCNR
