      Abstract

Amino acids are involved in many biological processes including the synthesis of proteins and fats, thus detection of amino acids can be used to predict the presence or absence of disease. Amino acid detection requires non-toxic and good biocompatibility biosensors such as Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs). This research studies the theoretical application of GQDs as biosensors in detecting amino acids, namely glutamic acid, histidine, tyrosine and lysine. This study uses DFT calculations to obtain results in the form of electronic properties and energy analysis of adsorption system. The calculation results show that the energy gap becomes smaller and the total energy value becomes more negative after being adsorbed, which means that GQDs have good electronic properties as biosensors. TDDFT calculations are also carried out to see the optical properties by showing the absorption spectrum. However, the optical properties shown by GQDs as biosensors are not good because they cannot detect all the tested amino acids.
