dc.description.abstractThe aim of this research is to evaluate the effect of virgin coconut oil (VCO) on the profile of copper zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD) in the kidney tissue of rats. A total of 25 male white rats (Rattus novergicus), Sprague Dawley were used for this study. They were divided into 5 groups ; (1) negative control group (K-), (2) positive control/diabetic rats group which was orally treated with aquadest (K+), (3) diabetic rats treated with VCO A (VA), (4) diabetic rats treated with VCO B (VB), (5) diabetic rats treated with coconut oil (MG). Diabetic condition was achieved by alloxan injection (IP, 110 mg/kgBW). The dose of aquadest, VCO, and coconut oil was 5ml/rat/day. The treatment were done for 28 days. The kidney were obtained at the end of treatment and then processed using paraffin embedding standard methods. The tissue were then stained with Hematoxillin-Eosin and immunohistochemical technique for Cu,Zn-SOD. The kidney tissues of diabetic rats group treated with VCO showed better morphological feature and higher content of Cu,Zn-SOD compared to that of diabetic rats group treated with aquades only or coconut oil. The treatment of VCO A gave better effect on the profile of antioxidant Cu,Zn-SOD compared to VCO B. Key words : Virgin coconut oil, diabetes mellitus, superoxide dismutase (SOD), kidney, ratid
