Abstract. The atherogenic diet IPB-1, which induces hypercholesterolaemia, has the potential to cause
obesity and hyperglycaemia in cynomolgus monkeys. This study aimed to see the chronic effects of IPB-1 atherogenic diet on obesity and hyperglycaemia in cynomolgus monkeys. The experimental animals were 20 adult male cynomolgus monkeys which had previously been treated with a diet of IPB-1 atherogenic for one year. These monkeys were then continually fed with IPB-1 atherogenic for one more year (the second year), and then later observed for body weight and waist circumference as variables of obesity, and also fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c as variables of hyperglycaemia. The results showed that body weight and waist circumference of 20 monkeys were in the normal range (4.1-6.9 kg and 27.0-34.5 cm) respectively, and that there was a trend to decrease during observation. The fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c were also within the normal range (48-80 mg/dl and 3.9-4.5%). These results showed that the IPB-1 atherogenic consumed for two years did not cause obesity and hyperglycaemia in cynomolgus monkeys.
