Tropical forests have higher diversity of bryophytes species than other regions in the world. Diversity and abundance of bryophytes depend on the altitude. This study aims to inventory the diversity of bryophytes of Mount Lawu and their distribution based on the altitude and type of substrate. Sampling was carried out along a hiking trail of Cemoro Sewu. Total of 85 species (34 families, 56 genera), consist of 55 species of mosses (17 families, 35 genera), 28 species of leafy liverworts (15 families, 19 genera), one thalloid liverworts, and one hornworts species were found in the study. Dicranaceae (19 species, seven genera) and Bryaceae (eight species, four genera) have higher much of species. Those mosses were found mostly terrestrial growing on rock substrate. Bryophytes distribution evenly on upper mountain zones as well as at sub-alpine zone. The diversity of leafy liverworts more higher in the mountain zone (2000-3000 masl) than in sub-alpine zone (3000-3265 masl).en
