dc.description.abstractThe existence of forests to local communities surrounding the forest area gives economic, ecological, and social benefits. Empowering communities is the one of the important thing to preserve forests. The study assess the perceptions, motivations and behavior in using and managing forests. The method has been used was a structured interview (questionnaire) by taking a purposive sampling respondents, observation and literary study. The level of public perception for the existence of forest in the village of Gunung Sari is relatively good, whereas the public perception of the value of the economic functions of forests as sources of timber and additional income for poor households. Furthermore, the biggest motivation (35.48%) to manage forests based on the theory of Maslow (1943) was due to the need of security (safety needs), while the biggest behavior motivation based on the theory of Gerungan (1967) was group motif with a percentage of 32.26%. Behavior of people who used and managed the forest have been shown by utilizing water resources well, planted of forest trees, and didn’t convert land of the forest.en
